Ellen Gates Starr
Ellen Gates Starr was born near Laona,Illinois her parents were Caleb Allen Starr and Susan Childs Gates Starr. Unlike Jane Addams, she didn't have a lot of money and her father could only pay for her to go Rockford for One year. Ellen Gates Starr was a co-founder of Hull House along with Jane Addams. They met at Rockford. Ellen Gates Starr also believed in equal rights for everyone. Ellen Gates Starr contributed to adding a book bindery to Hull House only to find out that not a lot of people wanted or needed the skill she was teaching. Some of Ellen Gate's Starr's accomplishments are she taught at a country school in Mount Morris, Illinois. Until 1879, where she was accepted to teach in Miss Kirkland's School for Girls, in Chicago, where she taught many different subjects. Even though her parents were not that religious, Ellen was influenced by her aunt Eliza Allen Starr and joined the Episcopal Church, in 1884. She then traveled to Europe with Jane Addams. She covered Hull House in art. Ellen was the first president of the CPS (Chicago Public Schools) art society. In 1915, she helped the textile workers that were on strike by providing food and other necessities. She ran to become an alderman for the 19th ward.
